![]() ![]() GOG.com is offering the game for $9.99-a price which gets you not only System Shock 2 repackaged to work correctly with modern Windows operating systems and computers (the game in its original form has issues running on computers with multicore CPUs), but also a set of excellent extras. Now, though, all of the rights have been gathered together again and entrusted to GOG.com, a site which has proven to be an excellent steward of the classic games of days gone by. Even making a sequel proved impossible, prompting Looking Glass alum Ken Levine to instead create BioShock, a game sharing many of System Shock 2's gameplay characteristics but none of the intellectual property. No single entity held all of the legal pieces necessary to package and publish the game. RockPaperShotgun has published the story of the multiyear battle waged to secure all of the rights necessary to digitally distribute the game, and it's an amazing read.ĭevelopment house Looking Glass Studios dissolved barely a year after System Shock 2's debut, and after the dissolution, the rights to the "System Shock" name and the trademarks ended up with different companies-including, oddly enough, an insurance company. After years of limbo, however, GOG.com (formerly known as "Good Old Games") has begun offering the game for sale. The others games you mentioned are at least worth consideration for being immersive sim-adjacent.Unfortunately, it has been almost impossible to legally acquire the game for a number of years. ![]() It definitely has that systemic unpredictability and reactivity. I think STALKER is an immersive sim, at least from the way it treats its world and AI. I definitely consider Crysis 1 an immersive sim but not 2 or 3. By Far Cry 4 though I felt like it was all gone and replaced by The Ubisoft Game. Even Far Cry 3 still had a little bit of that immersive sim feeling in it if you ask me, of pulling at the world to see how it reacts to you - only in everything outside the main story. It definitely has a sense of only giving players a place and a goal with some dynamically reactive systems along the way. Far Cry 2 I did play and it definitely tried to do this but was maybe sort of shallow in that regard. I haven't actually played FC1 but I hear it has a big focus on open-ended play and being able to manipulate systems however you want. But I'd argue that you can call Far Cry 1 and 2 immersive sims, or at least attempts at immersive sims. ![]() The others games you mentioned are at least worth consideration for being immersive sim-adjacent. I'm looking forward to pretty much all of these games, but I don't think I would call any of them a straight immersive sim game - like the Deus Ex games are or Dishonored, Prey or System ShockĬlick to shrink.I think STALKER is an immersive sim, at least from the way it treats its world and AI. and hopefully they didn't scraped too much from their first presented vision of the game Was the first Dying Light game a immersive sim game? Never really played it and from what we know about DL2 is that it should have non-linear story and choices and consenquences system, but I think nothing about really immersive sim elements. and who knows if the game is to going to be even someday really, actually released from the gameplay showed it looked more like BioShock than true immersive sim games, but who knows. #BEST SYSTEM SHOCK 2 MODS SERIES#and so far, we almost know nothing about STALKER 2 and I personally don't have that much faith that the game is really going to be released or to be atleast similiar to the first games from the series - almost no one (if even any) from the original developers are working on this new oneĪtomic Heart is so far just bizzare. Arkane is presenting DeathLoop as a "next-gen shooter game" and so far it looks like that too - I would say it looks like that it has even less immersive sim elements than the first two BioShock gamesĪre the STALKER games seen as immersive sim games? They have some elements of that genre, but if we are going to put all 3 STALKER games into that genre, then we would need to include there games like Far Cry, Metro or Crysis too. ![]()
